The potato greenhouse is the small, improvised growing space that Mark Watney builds inside the Ares 3 habitat on Mars after being left behind by his crew. Watney's decision to grow potatoes is not romantic; it is arithmetic. The Hab's food stores cover only a fraction of the time he will be stranded, and the water and power budget is razor-thin. Potatoes win because they are calorie-dense, tolerant of the limited light spectrum the LEDs can provide, and capable of multiple harvest cycles from the same root stock. He lines a section of the habitat with plastic sheeting, racks, and grow-light arrays, creating a sealed micro-climate that recycles moisture and keeps the plants alive without consuming the Hab's precious oxygen.

The soil problem is the crux. Martian regolith is toxic—perchlorates make it hostile to human biology—and it is essentially inert as far as plant nutrition goes. Watney solves this by mixing the red dust with human waste, using his own (and later, in the film, the crew's) excrement as a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium source. He tilts the water line, watching a thin ribbon of reclamation water trickle along the root channel. Somewhere behind him the O2 generator hums its low, endless drone, exhaling the water that keeps this whole operation alive. He straightens, wipes red dust from his knees, and mutters a number—calories per tuber, growth rate, days to next harvest—into his recorder. Outside the Hab's single window, Mars is the color of a bruise. Inside, under the blue-white glow of the LEDs, a small army of potatoes is quietly, stubbornly refusing to let him die.
