Watney's potato operation is born out of desperate arithmetic. He has a finite supply of food from the mission's stores, a finite supply of water, and no rescue for an unknown number of sols. The Hab's growing area—originally designed for short-term botanical experiments—becomes his lifeline. He mixes Martian soil, which is mineral-rich but biologically barren, with his own feces to supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The result is a crude but functional growing medium that can support potato tubers through their full lifecycle.

The process is iterative and precarious. Watney labels each planting as a numbered crop, harvesting one before the next is ready to eat. He must manage water with extreme frugality, relying on the Hab's air-to-water recycling and his own bodily output. Sol 312. The Hab hums its low, electric lullaby, and the air smells faintly of wet earth and green stems. Watney crouches in the growing area, his fingers buried in the dark, crumbly soil up to the second knuckle. The tubers are there—fat, pale, cool against his palm. He pulls one free, shakes off a clump of regolith, and holds it up to the grow-lights. Crop 4. Four months of careful watering, careful counting, careful not to let the water recycler glitch at 0300 while he's asleep. He drops the potato into the mesh bag beside him, already weighing it in his head against the caloric ledger he keeps in his head. Enough. Not a feast. Enough. He wipes his hands on his flight suit, stands up, and looks out the small porthole at the rust-colored nothing stretching to the horizon. Out there, the wind is picking up again. In here, the next row of seedlings is just starting to unfurl. He turns off the grow-lights for the night and lets the dark settle over the green, fragile, stubborn life he's coaxed out of a dead world.

The core idea is straightforward: grow a calorie-dense crop in a sealed, resource-limited environment using locally available materials. Watney's setup is essentially a low-tech soil-based grow operation. He uses Martian regolith as the physical medium, adds human feces to supply macronutrients (N-P-K), and waters with recycled water. The Hab's grow-lights provide the photoperiod, and the enclosed space keeps the plants safe from the external environment.

In the story, this appears most vividly in the scenes where Watney is shown tending the rows, checking soil moisture, and calculating whether the next crop will be ready before his stored food runs out. The tension comes from the fragility: one system failure and the whole operation collapses.

Where the story takes a license: Martian regolith contains perchlorates, which are toxic to most Earth plants and would need to be leached out before growing crops. The narrative doesn't dwell on this, and the feces amendment is a simplification—real Martian agriculture would require far more sophisticated soil remediation, controlled-atmosphere growth chambers, and likely hydroponic or aeroponic systems rather than open soil. The radiation shielding is also somewhat optimistic; sustained UV and cosmic-ray exposure would stress or damage the plants over months.

What is grounded: the basic botany of potato growth (tubers, photoperiod, nutrient cycling), the water-recycling principle, the caloric math of sustaining one adult on a single crop, and the general feasibility of growing food in a pressurized, temperature-controlled habitat. NASA's own research into closed-loop life-support agriculture validates the broad concept, even if Watney's specific methods are a heroic oversimplification.
