The regolith's most consequential property in the story is its perchlorate content. He wiped the glass with a sleeve and immediately had a thin film of red powder on his fingers. He'd been doing this for weeks. Wiping, washing, scraping it off the solar panels, out of the air filtration intakes, off the top of the potato rows where it settled like a fine, toxic frost. He looked at his hands. Red. Always red. He thought, not for the first time, that if he ever got back to Earth, he'd have to scrub his skin for a month just to convince a doctor he wasn't a Mars sample. Then he went back to the farm, because the potatoes didn't care about his hands, and they were going to need watering, and the perchlorate wash cycle was due again, and the dust would be there, waiting, patient as geology.

Reader's Guide

The core 'how did he actually do that?' question around Martian regolith is: how do you grow food in dirt that has no nutrients, no organic matter, and is chemically toxic? In the story, Watney's solution is essentially a three-step process: (1) mix the regolith with human waste to supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; (2) wash the perchlorates out with water, since perchlorate salts are water-soluble and leach away; and (3) grow potatoes, which are remarkably tough, low-maintenance crops that tolerate poor conditions better than most vegetables.

This is grounded in real science. NASA's Phoenix lander (2008) and the Curiosity rover both confirmed the presence of perchlorates in Martian soil. The red color from iron oxides (hematite, goethite) is well established. The absence of organic matter is a well-known characteristic of Martian regolith. Where the story takes a license: the timeline is compressed. In reality, you would need far more time to establish a viable crop, and the water budget would be far tighter. The amount of waste needed to supply adequate nutrients for a sustained harvest is generous in the narrative. And the dust storm's duration and density, while inspired by real Martian storms, are dramatized for plot. The perchlorate concentration in actual Martian soil is relatively low (parts per million range), so the toxicity threat, while real, is somewhat amplified for narrative tension. The overall concept—process the dirt, grow the spuds, survive—is sound.
